Threaded skulls are definitely the most desired item at Eclectic Array, besides being astonishingly beautiful, the way they are made is incredible.
These skulls are made by Huichol artisans from Mexico. Huicholes are native Mexicans living in the Sierra Madre Occidental- in the states of Nayarit, Jalisco, Zacatecas and Durango. They have their own language which is the Wixarika and their own religion that consists or four principle deities: the trinity of Corn, Blue Deer and Peyote, and the Eagle, all descended from their Sun God, "Tao Jreeku”.
Before telling you the process, I want to let you know something very important:
The animals are not killed or mistreated by anyone who is part of this art, these are skulls found in the mountains in Nayarit by our artisans, whose means are not to promote animal cruelty in any way!
After the skull is found and treated, bees-wax is applied, covering the area where the threads will be laid. Afterwards, the artisans start the design which is done thread by thread.
This work takes a lot of patience, as you can imagine! Some Huichol even do this as a meditation.
Although our Threaded Skulls are done by Huichol people and methods, the art designs are not Huichol. Huichol designs usually have bright colors and everything has a symbolism. Although their designs are incredibly beautiful, we decided to focus on the Chakras.
According to Buddhism and Hinduism, Chakras are centers of spiritual power in the subtle body (energies). The word “chakra” literally means “wheel”, “circle” and “cycle” in Sanskrit- the primary sacred language of these religions. There are seven major chakras in the body:
