What It Really Means to Make Things with Intention
Share
There’s a moment every year when I find myself slowing down a little more.
Thinking not just about what we’re creating, but how.
Where things come from.
Who is behind them.
And what it actually takes for something to exist in the world.
Because over time, those choices start to matter more than anything else.
At Eclectic Array, what we make has never been about just one thing.
Not one material.
Not one technique.
Not even one aesthetic.
It’s a series of decisions, small ones, repeated over and over again, with intention behind them. And in many ways, that’s exactly what led us to become a Certified B Corporation. Not for the label. But for the responsibility that comes with it.
B Corp certification is one of those things that sounds simple on the surface, but it’s actually incredibly rigorous. It looks at everything, how you treat your team, how you work with communities, how your supply chain operates, how you think about the environment, and how you make decisions as a company.
It’s not about one product being “sustainable.”
It’s about the entire business being held accountable.
And what I love most is that it’s not a one-time achievement. You have to keep proving it. Keep improving. Keep asking yourself hard questions every few years.
That part feels very real to me.
Because the truth is, we’re not perfect.
But we care deeply about doing things better, step by step.
Sometimes that starts with materials.
We gravitate toward natural fibers, cotton that breathes, palm that carries texture, materials that don’t try to hide where they come from. I’ve always believed there’s something beautiful about that honesty. The slight variations. The imperfections. The feeling that something is alive, not mass produced.

Sometimes it’s about process.
So many of our pieces are made entirely by hand. Macramé, embroidery, beadwork… techniques that take time. Real time. Hours, days, sometimes months. There’s no rushing that kind of work. And honestly, I don’t think we should try to.
Because that’s where the magic is.
And always, always, it comes back to people.
Behind every piece we carry, there’s someone whose life is directly connected to it. Many of the artisans we work with are women. Many are mothers. Women like Pascuala, who started working with her hands and today leads a community of more than 50 women creating together.
For them, this work isn’t extra.
It’s everything.
It’s what allows them to support their families, stay close to home, and continue traditions that have been passed down for generations.
And I think about that a lot. Because when you pick up one of our pieces, a woven bag, a soft baby cotton dress from Helsol, a hand-finished accessory, you’re not just holding something beautiful.
You’re holding part of that story.
That’s what makes it different.

B Corp certification, for us, is simply a way of putting structure and accountability around something we’ve always believed in: that business can be a force for good, but only if you’re willing to do the work behind the scenes.
And that work is ongoing.
We’re constantly learning. Adjusting. Rethinking. Trying to make better decisions with what we have. Not all at once. But piece by piece.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned through this journey, it’s this:
It’s not about doing everything perfectly.
It’s about choosing more thoughtfully, whenever you can.
So this month, if you find yourself shopping, gifting, or even just browsing, pause for a second. Ask yourself where something came from. Who made it. What it supports.

Because those choices, even the small ones, add up.
And they shape the kind of world we’re all creating together.
